Main Street Revitalization and Placemaking: Session 1
March 14, 2025
9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (registration beings at 9 a.m.)
Join SEMCOG for the first of a three-part series on Main Street Revitalization and Placemaking. This series has been designed to support elected officials, community administrators, and professionals working to revitalize Main Streets, commercial corridors, and downtowns in rural communities, small towns and dynamic urban centers.
Creating successful Main Streets requires developing a vision, building capacity, and identifying funding. It is important to connect the dots between various types of projects in a downtown – such as placemaking, infrastructure, roads, and economic development.
- How do we create a vision that addresses all elements?
- How do local governments turn vision into reality, especially when faced with limited resources?
- What kind of legal and financial structures can be used to build out staff and capacity?
- What kind of funding sources – specifically grants – can be used to fund MainStreet, downtown improvement, and placemaking projects?
This meeting will be held in-person at SEMCOG’s downtown Detroit offices.

Parking information
Parking Validation: Bring your vehicle license plate number to SEMCOG. DO NOT PAY using the QR code in the garage
Meeting attendees parking at the 1 State Street Parking Garage (also known as the 1001 Woodward Garage) enter/exit using a pay-by-plate system – without a credit card. If there is a sign saying Badge Holders Only, or Lot Full, and attendant is present, tell them you are there for a SEMCOG meeting and that parking has been reserved. SEMCOG guests should disregard signage posted in the garage with instructions for visitors to scan a QR code. Instead, please bring your vehicle license plate number to the SEMCOG welcome/registration desk, where staff will assist you in entering your plate number for validation.
Note: If the State Street structure is full, additional parking is available at One Campus Martius (OCM) garage at 1140 Farmer St, Detroit, MI 48226 (located one block east of the SEMCOG offices) using the process stated above. When parking at OCM, you may walk around or through the Meridian building and cross Woodward to get to 1001 Woodward and SEMCOG's office. SEMCOG is unable to offer parking validation at other locations.
